How to Install Arc GTK theme on Ubuntu in Easiest way

If you’re bored with your current desktop environment or you want to refresh the look of your desktop, you should change your experience by installing great themes available for your Ubuntu/Linux system.

Arc GTK theme is one of the most popular flat theme for Ubuntu and Ubuntu based systems. It supports GTK 3 and GTK 2 based desktop environments like GNOME, Unity, Budgie, Xfce, Pantheon, MATE, etc. and it is available in three variants- Arc, Arc-Darker and Arc-Dark. It is highly recommended by the users and the community.

Here’s how to install Arc GTK theme on Ubuntu.


First of all you should try if the Arc theme is available in your software center. If it is available, then just open terminal using Ctrl + Alt + t and run the following command:

sudo apt install arc-theme

In case that doesn’t work, we have other simple ways to install the theme.

If you’re using Ubuntu 18.04 or above, you can easily install Arc theme by copying and pasting the following link in the address bar of your browser.

apt://arc-theme

To install Arc theme on Ubuntu 16.04, open terminal using Ctrl + Alt + t and run the following commands:

You’ll need to add repositories for the theme first and after installation, import repository’s keys to avoid any errors in the command line. Just run these commands in the terminal:

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Horst3180/xUbuntu_16.04/ /' >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/arc-theme.list"

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install arc-theme

wget http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:Horst3180/xUbuntu_16.04/Release.key

sudo apt-key add - < Release.key

That’s it. Arc theme has been installed on your Ubuntu system.


How to change and apply themes on Ubuntu

Now that you’ve installed the theme, you will definitely want to switch to the new GTK theme. To set Arc theme on Ubuntu, you’ll need Unity tweak tool. It is freely available in the Ubuntu software center. To install Unity tweak tool, copy and paste the link below in the address bar of your browser.

apt://unity-tweak-tool

OR

Just search “Unity tweak tool” inside Ubuntu software, you’ll get it there.

After you’ve installed both the resources, you can change the theme of your desktop.

Step 1 : Launch Unity tweak tool.

Step 2 : Go to appearance > themes.

Step 3 : Select the theme that you want to use.


If you’re using GNOME desktop, launch GNOME and change the theme from there.

Congratulations! Your fresh desktop environment with Arc theme is ready.
